---|
39 | degree in Mineralogy (<a href= |
---|
40 | "http://www.mineralogie.ruhr-uni-bochum.de/eng/index.html">Bochum, |
---|
41 | Germany</a>), and a Ph.D. in Crystallography (<a href= |
---|
42 | "http://www.crystal.mat.ethz.ch/Intro/lfkcry">ETH Zurich</a> , |
---|
43 | Switzerland). Real Mineralogists and Crystallographers run experiments with |
---|
44 | x-rays and hardware that is not normally associated with C++ and Boost. |
---|
45 | However, when Ralf kept breaking the expensive experimental equipment too |
---|
46 | often, he decided that he would cause less damage as a computational |
---|
47 | crystallographer.</p> |
---|
48 | |
---|
49 | <p>Being a scientist, Ralf spent most of his life programming in Fortran, |
---|
50 | the great grand-father of all good programming languages (if you know |
---|
51 | Backus-Naur you know the name of the <a href= |
---|
52 | "http://www-groups.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/Mathematicians/Backus.html">inventor |
---|
53 | of Fortran</a>). Ralf is a co-author of the <a href= |
---|
54 | "http://cns.csb.yale.edu/">CNS</a> Fortran program that is very popular in |
---|
55 | structural biology. When he learned that a real programmer can write |
---|
56 | Fortran in any language, Ralf knew that it was time for him to learn C++. |
---|
57 | Of course, absorbing four decades of progress in the field of computer |
---|
58 | science all at once crashed his brain. To be able to deal with the |
---|
59 | challenge, he spawned two child processes and named them Lisa and Anna. To |
---|
60 | see Lisa, click on the picture and turn your monitor by 180 degrees around |
---|
61 | the view axis. (Other pictures of <a href= |
---|
62 | "http://cci.lbl.gov/~rwgk/Lisa-Roza-Illes/">Lisa</a> and <a href= |
---|
63 | "http://cci.lbl.gov/~rwgk/Anna-Rhona-Illes/">Anna</a> do not require |
---|
64 | gymnastics with the monitor.)</p> |
---|
65 | |
---|
66 | <p>Right now, Ralf is working for the <a href= |
---|
67 | "http://cci.lbl.gov/">Computational Crystallography Initiative</a> at the |
---|
68 | <a href="http://www.lbl.gov/">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory</a> in |
---|
69 | California. The goal of this initiative is to write a software system for |
---|
70 | high-throughput protein crystal structure determination, also known as |
---|
71 | <a href="http://www.nigms.nih.gov/news/announcements/psi.html">Structural |
---|
72 | Genomics</a>. Surprisingly, the gestation period for such a system turns |
---|
73 | out to be much longer than it was for Lisa and Anna. However, pre-natal |
---|
74 | diagnosis already revealed that Python and C++ are the parents-to-be. For |
---|
75 | an ultra-sound image of the new system at its early developmental stage |
